Reliability, validity and consistency of Korean version of Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RM-24) with LBP and CLBP patients

Lee et al.(2011) have evaluated the reliability of the adapted RMDQ (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire)  Korean Version(with 81 patients responding to primary mailing of questionnaire of which  63 patients gave response to second survey as well).  The assessment of reliability was done by the evaluation and estimation of agreement for every item by kappa statistics, the ICC , and by evaluation of α. Concurrent validity of Cronbach. This is done by the comparison of RMDQ’s responses with ODI (Oswestry Disablilty Index) responses and VAS(Visual Analog Scale) results with the usage of correlation coefficient of Pearson. The Bland-Altman plot that is constructed depicted good reliability. All the items have greater than 0.6 agreement of kappa statistics. High reliability for test/retest was shown by RMDQ. This is evident by high value of ICC for two of the test occasions ( ICC= 0.932,  P < 0.001). There is correlation of RMDQ with the VAS (r = 0.692; P = 0.000 and r = 0.668; P = 0.000 at first and second assessments, respectively) and with that of ODI it is (r = 0.789; P = 0.000 and r = 0.802; P = 0.000, respectively). RMDQ’s adapted Korean version was translated successfully and showed properties of measurement that are acceptable. As such this is considered to be well suited for the outcome assessments in the LBP patients who speak in Korean language.

Lee et al.(2011) have evaluated validity of the RMDQ (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire) of the  Korean Version that is adapted . There was translation or retranslation of RMDQ’s English version that was conducted. Apart from this all steps needed for the process of cross–cultural adaptation were performed. RMDQ, VAS (Visual Analog Scale) measure of pain and ODI (Oswestry Disability Index) which is validated previously in the Korean version were sent through mail to 100 patients with CLBP (Chronic Lower Back Pain) for a minimum of three months. 81 patients gave response to the primary mailing of the questionnaires and sixty three patients who responded for the first time have given their second survey. The patients’ average age was 47.8 years and there were eighteen males and forty-five females in the 63 patients.

RMDQ’s adapted Korean version was translated successfully and showed properties of measurement that are acceptable. As such this is considered to be well suited for the outcome assessments in the LBP patients who speak in Korean language.

In the study by Lee et al.(2011) on consistency of adapted Korean version of RMDQ adapted, there was very good internal consistency available at both the assessments of Cronbach’s α (that is 0.942 and 0.951 at first and second assessments, respectively). RMDQ’s adapted Korean version was translated successfully, showed acceptable measurement properties and is well-suited for outcomes of assessments for Korean speaking LBP patients.
